Daniele Gatti studied piano, violin, composition and conducting at the Conservatory in his native city. At the age of 27 he first conducted at La Scala Milan, followed by guest conducting assignments at the Teatro la Fenice in Venice, the Teatro Communale di Bologna, the Berlin State Opera Unter den Linden and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. In 1992, Gatti was appointed musical director of the "Accademia Nazionale de Santa Cecilia" in Rome, a position he held until 1997. In 1996 he also took over the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, with which he has made several very successful recordings, most recently the Fourth Symphony by Gustav Mahler. In the course of his career Mr. Gatti has mounted the podiums of virtually every major symphony orchestra in the world, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra as well as the great American orchestras in Chicago, New York, Philadelphia, Los Angeles and San Francisco. From 1997 to 2007 the conductor was Musical Director of the Teatro Communale di Bologna. Since September 2008 he has been appointed Music Director of the Orchestre National de France taking over the role from Kurt Masur. Daniele Gatti first conducted the Munich Philharmonic in December of 1998.
