Absolute Musik ist schön. Doch als Zuhörer*in weckt es durchaus die Neugier, wenn man Anklänge an die Natur wahrnimmt, ein Programm hinter der Musik erahnen kann oder man Einblicke in die Kompositionsgeschichte eines Stückes erhält. So hörte das Publikum etwa in Haydns Streichquartett op. 64 Nr. 5 den Ruf der Lerche erklingen und rasch erhielt es den Beinahmen »Lerchenquartett «. Das Leben der Schumanns wurde von Clara meist in knappen Einträgen im Ehetagebuch festgehalten und vermittelt damit einen Eindruck über den fieberhaften Kompositionsstil ihres Mannes. Janáčeks Streichquartett, »Intime Briefe« war durch die Liebe des 74-jährigen Komponisten zur 36-jährigen Kamila Stöslová inspiriert. Es liegt zwar kein Programm zu diesem Werk vor, doch beschreibt er die Entstehung der einzelnen Sätze in Briefen an Kamila und beflügelt so unsere Fantasie.
