Ganz im Sinne der Nationalstaatlichkeit des 19. Jahrhunderts befand man sich auch in Russland auf der Suche nach der eigenen Tradition und Tonsprache. So formte sich das Mächtige Häuflein, zu dem auch Nikolaj Rimskij-Korsakow zählte, um die Nationalrussische Musik zu fördern. Als Gemeinschaftskomposition mit neun weiteren Komponisten schrieb er 1898 die »Variationen über ein russisches Volkslied«. Unter diesen Komponisten befand sich auch Alexander Glasunow, der in seiner Musik aber neben volksliedhaften Anklängen auch Stilelemente Tschaikowskys, Exotismen und Orientalismen verwendet. Die politischen Umstände beeinflussten die Komponisten stark. Sergej Prokofjew war in den Wirren der Oktoberrevolution nach Paris geflohen und orientierte sich bis zu seiner Rückkehr nach Russland in den 30er Jahren an einer modernen Tonsprache. Hochgepriesen und verdammt, so könnte man das schwierige Verhältnis Stalins zu Dimitrij Schostakowitschs Musik beschreiben. Ein russisches Roulette sozusagen, sich den Grenzen des kompositorisch Möglichen zu nähern ohne dabei in Ungnade zu fallen.
