Klassizistisch und dennoch experimentell ist Sergej Prokofjews g-Moll-Konzert, das zweite seiner fünf Klavierkonzerte. Den virtuosen, fast schon sportlichen Gestus, der in einer auftrumpfenden Solokadenz gipfelt, paart Prokofjew mit einer ausgeprägten melodischen Komponente. Für beides — brillante Virtuosität und tiefgehende melodische Gestaltung — steht der russische Pianist Alexander Melnikov. In der »Gogol-Suite« offenbart Alfred Schnittke seinen unerschöpflichen Sinn für musikalischen Witz. Mit Ausnahme des letzten Satzes, der in dunkleren Farben gehalten ist, gibt es in der Schauspielmusik zu Gogols Komödie »Der Revisor« kaum einen Moment wirklicher Ernsthaftigkeit. Für seine theatralischen und zupackenden Interpretationen bewundert, gilt der russische Dirigent Maxim Emelyanychev als einer der vielversprechendsten Dirigenten seiner Generation — und als Spezialist für die Werke Mozarts. Die »Haffner-Symphonie« war ein Auftragswerk des Salzburger Kaufmanns Siegmund Haffner zu seiner feierlichen Erhebung in den Adelsstand. Mozart schuf das Werk unter größtem Zeitdruck, was man dem übersprudelnden symphonischen Feuerwerk nicht anhört.
