An Superlativen mangelt es nicht, wenn von Sergej Rachmaninows 3. Klavierkonzert die Rede ist. Es gilt als eines der herausforderndsten Werke für Pianist*innen, »das Konzert mit den meisten Noten pro Sekunde«. Doch das Stück ist keine oberflächliche Parade des Virtuosentums, denn Rachmaninow gelingt es, die bravouröse Zurschaustellung mit tiefem »Sentiment« zu füllen. Nach seinem fulminanten Debüt bei den Münchner Philharmonikern, bei dem Kyohei Sorita mit Rachmaninows 2. Klavierkonzert für Begeisterung sorgte, kehrt er nun mit dem Schwesterwerk in die Isarphilharmonie zurück. In seinen brillant orchestrierten »The Planets« vollzieht Gustav Holst eine klangliche Reise durch den Kosmos. Jedem der sieben Planeten unseres Sonnensystems ist ein Satz gewidmet, der jeweils die mythologischen Eigenschaften des Himmelskörpers höchst wirkungsvoll illustriert. Nicht nur das zeitgenössische Publikum bedauerte, dass Gustav Holst zu diesem monumentalen Stück kein Nachfolgewerk lieferte. Und so wurden »The Planets« zum klassischen One Hit Wonder — bei den Münchner Philharmonikern dirigiert von Gustavo Gimeno.
