"An American in Paris"

"It is my intention to record the impressions of an American traveler strolling through Paris, listening to street noises and taking in the French atmosphere". With these sentences, Gershwin described the musical content on which "An American in Paris" is based. The inspirational source for this work was the composer´s stay in Paris in 1928. While still there, he becan the composition, which he then completed on his return to the United States. For the world première on December 13, 1928 in New York´s Carnegie Hall, Gershwin had four taxi horns with different pitches imported from Paris. These were used as instruments for special sound effects in the first and third sections of this one-movement piece.
