FAMILY CONCERTS: STRAVINSKY’S »THE FIREBIRD«

with Malte Arkona in the Philharmonie

»The Firebird« made Igor Stravinsky world famous. Based on ancient Russian sagas from the composer’s home country, his music breathes life into such characters as Prince Ivan, the sinister magician Kastchei and, not least, the mysterious Firebird. As well as lending the characters his voice, Malte Arkona will moderate the afternoon, leading the audience through the story as retold by author Juri Tetzlaff. He will be supported by members of the Munich Philharmonic and its partner orchestra, the award-winning ODEON-Jugendsinfonieorchester München under the baton of Valery Gergiev.

Recommended for age six years and up.

Tickets for 2.30 p.m.

Tickets for 4.30 p.m.

THE MUNICH PHILHARMONIC, HÉLÈNE GRIMAUD AND THE MARIINSKY BALLET

In the Philharmonie

The programme continues on Saturday night and Sunday morning with two further concerts with star pianist Hélène Grimaud. While Stravinsky’s »Symphonies of Wind Instruments« and Beethoven’s fourth piano concerto fill the halls of Philharmonie Gasteig, the legendary Mariinsky Ballet will be warming up backstage for their live performance in the second part of the concert – Igor Stravinsky’s »Petrushka« in a new, radical production by choreographer Vladimir Varnavas.

Tickets for Saturday, 24_02_2018 7 p.m.

Tickets for Sunday, 25_02_2018 11 a.m.

»A DATE WITH STRAVINSKY, PART TWO«

In Muffathalle

The second Date with Stravinsky also begins with a series of piano sonatas by Igor Stravinsky and his violin concerto with the young violinist Kristóf Baráti under the baton of Valery Gergiev. Valery Gergiev will conduct the Munich Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra and the Mariinsky Stradivarius Ensemble with Stravinsky’s »Concerto in D«. Then, Lorenz Nasturica-Herschcowici will lead us into warmer climes with a performance of the two »Summers« from both Antonio Vivaldi and Astor Piazzolla’s »Four Seasons«.

This evening, too, ends with a shared celebration with Latin rhythms from »Los Pitutos«.

MPHIL CHAMBER ORCHESTRA & MARIINSKY STRADIVARIUS ENSEMBLE

In the Philharmonie

Never change a winning team – this also goes for the partnership between the Munich Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra and the Mariinsky Stradivarius Ensemble with conductor Valery Gergiev. Already on stage together at last year’s »MPHIL 360°« festival, they will this year present two of the best-known masterpieces for string orchestra: Antonio Vivaldi’s »Four Seasons« and Richard Strauss’s »Metamorphosen«. Naturally, Stravinsky must also make an appearance, contributing his masterly »Concerto in D« as well as his violin concerto to the evening. The soloist is Kristóf Baráti.
