Herbert Heim was born in Munich in 1953 and began studying the cello at age 8. As of 1971, he studied at the Munich Music Academy with Walter Reichardt, Fritz Kiskalt and Adolf Schmidt. In 1972 he won the 2nd Prize for piano trio at the "Jugend musiziert" Competition, and he was awarded the "Six o'Clock Concerts" encouragement prize from the Bavarian Union Bank. In 1978, Herbert Heim concluded his studies with a master class diploma and joined the Opera House and Museum Orchestra in Frankfurt. Since 1980, he has been a member of the Munich Philharmonic. He has appeared as soloist and as member of several different chamber music ensembles in Germany, Austria, Italy and Switzerland and taken part in recordings at Bavarian Radio.
