Receiving her first violin lessons at the age of seven, Dresden-born Regina Matthes became a junior student of Prof Reinhard Ulbrichts. From 1978 she was a student at the Hochschule für Musik “Carl Maria von Weber” in Dresden while gaining further experience in orchestra playing at the Orchestra Academy of Staatskapelle Dresden.

Regina Matthes achieved first place in the international Kocian Violin Competition and came second in the international Henryk Wieniawski Violin Competition, the International Johann Sebastian Bach Competition and the “Wettbewerb der 4 Musikhochschulen der DDR”. As a soloist she performed both in Germany and abroad.

She played first violin in the Staatskapelle Berlin, where she was also principal violinist of the chamber orchestra, before joining the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra in 1986.
