With the opening of the 2021/22 season Gustavo Gimeno celebrates with live audiences on both sides of the Atlantic: as Music Director with Orchestre Philharmonique de Luxembourg – a title he has held since 2015, and with Toronto Symphony Orchestra where his tenure began in 2020/21. During his first season in Toronto, Gimeno and the TSO have taken the opportunity to record and stream a range of digital performances and in 2021/22 they celebrate doubly, as this also marks the TSO’s centenary season.
International touring has formed a significant part of Gimeno’s commitment with OPL during the last six years, visiting many of Europe’s and South America’s most prestigious concert halls; and soloists with whom Gimeno has shared the stage include Daniel Barenboim, Gautier Capuçon, Anja Harteros, Leonidas Kavakos, Bryn Terfel, Yuja Wang and Frank Peter Zimmermann. A highlight has been performances of the complete Beethoven Piano Concertos with Krystian Zimerman.
In 2020, Gimeno conducted the world premiere of Francisco Coll’s Violin Concerto, written for Patricia Kopatchinskaja and co-commissioned with NTR ZaterdagMatinee, London Symphony Orchestra, Seattle Symphony and Bamberger Symphoniker. During 2021 Pentatone released a recording of the Violin Concerto with Kopatchinskaja, Gimeno and OPL as part of a Coll monograph. Gimeno’s catalogue on Pentatone with OPL already includes Shostakovich’s Symphony No.1 and Bruckner’s Symphony No.1, Ravel’s complete ballet music to Daphnis et Chloé, Mahler’s Symphony No.4, Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring, Rossini’s Petite Messe solennelle and César Franck’s Symphony in D minor.
As an opera conductor he is invited for major titles at great houses such as the Liceu Opera Barcelona; Opernhaus Zürich; Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia, Valencia and Teatro Real Madrid, where he conducts Calixto Bieito’s production of Prokofiev’s Fiery Angel in 2022. He is much sought-after as a symphonic guest conductor worldwide: debuts in 2021 and 2022 include Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and San Francisco Symphony, while highlights of past seasons include concerts with Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Münchner Philharmoniker, Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, Wiener Symphoniker, Orchestre National de France, Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Boston and Chicago symphony orchestras, Washington’s National Symphony Orchestra, The Cleveland Orchestra and Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia. Gimeno is also regularly reinvited to the Concertgebouworkest. At home and abroad touring projects have included concerts as far afield as Japan and Taiwan.
Born in Valencia, Gustavo Gimeno began his international conducting career in 2012 under the mentorship of Mariss Jansons – and benefited too from the support and influence of Bernard Haitink and Claudio Abbado.
