Henry Purcell was considered the most important English composer during his lifetime during the Baroque period. He was organist at Westminster Abbey at the Chapel Royal. His works were held in high esteem by his contemporaries and successors, notably Handel. He died in 1695 in his mid-30s at the zenith of his creative career and was buried in Westminster Abbey next to the organ.
