Michael Haydn

Michael Haydn (1737-1806), the younger brother of Joseph Haydn, was, like his more famous brother Joseph, a choirboy at St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna. In 1763, he was appointed court composer (court musician and concertmaster) in Salzburg, where he worked alongside Mozart and his son. Haydn succeeded Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart as organist at the Trinity Church in 1782 and was later also responsible for the cathedral music. Haydn worked in Salzburg for a total of 43 years. He wrote 360 sacred and secular compositions and was an important pioneer of sacred music.
