Valery Gergiev to Conduct Shostakovitch Cycle

Explosive, emotional, bold - Valery Gergiev ranks as a conductor who almost forcefully puts listeners under his spell. During the 2011/2012 season he will be appearing in Munich with a Shostakovich cycle. This extensive project was made possible by a cooperation between the Munich Philharmonic and the Orchestra of the Maryinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg. Between November of 2011 and July of 2012, concert-goers will be able to hear all 15 Shostakovich symphonies on seven evenings - all of them with acknowledged Shostakovich expert Gergiev on the podium - leading the Munich Philharmonic in six of these works and the Orchestra of the Maryinsky Theatre in the other nine. “Shostakovich is the last great symphonist of the 20th century and one of the greatest and most thrilling artistic personalities Russia has ever brought forth,” says Gergiev in enthusiastically. >>>

Diana Damrau sings Strauss songs

In this collection of Strauss songs Diana Damrau is joined by the Munich Philharmonic and Christian Thielemann, the leading German conductor of his generation. Soprano Diana Damrau, described by The Sunday Times as “the most dazzling star to have emerged from Germany in recent years” was born in Bavaria. The region’s capital, Munich, was the birthplace of Richard Strauss, and in March 2009 a programme of the composer’s songs was presented at the city’s Gasteig Philharmonie. “Strauss loved female voices,” says Damrau, “and he explores some extreme possibilities in these many-layered songs, each with its different point of view.”

A German Requiem

Newly released on DVD: Christian Thielemann’s interpretation of Johannes Brahms’s “Ein deutsches Requiem” (“A German Requiem”) op.45. with the Munich Philharmonic and the Chor des Bayerischen Rundfunks (Chorus Master: Peter Dijkstra) under Thielemenn’s direction. Two first-class soloists, Christine Schäfer and Christian Gerhaher, were also on the concert stage. “With this performance of Brahms’s German Requiem, Christian Thielemann not only reinforces his reputation as one of the great conductors of his generation, but also stands on the same level as Maazel, Furtwängler, Karajan and Klemperer as one of the best interpreters of this work.” (jpc)

Elektra on DVD

After the huge success with “Rosenkavalier” in 2009, the Munich Philharmonic and Christian Thielemann landed another big operatic hit with “Elektra” in January of 2010 in a production staged by Herbert Wernicke. “A major event, a sensation” wrote the Stuttgarter Zeitung about the production in the Baden-Baden Festival Theatre, featuring an all-star cast: besides Linda Watson as Elektra, Jane Henschel as Klytämnestra, Manuela Uhl as Chrysothemis and Albert Dohmen as Orest, René Kollo gave an impressive delineation in his role début as Aegisth. Now the enthusiastically received “Elektra” production with the Munich Philharmonic under Christian Thielemann has been released on DVD and is available in shops.
