A native of Wuppertal, the musician took his first cello lessons at the age of nine. After winning three federal prizes at the "Jugend musiziert" competition and first prize at the international "Charles Hennen" Chamber Music Competition in the Netherlands, Manuel von der Nahmer began his studies with Wolfgang Boettcher in Berlin in 1990, concluding them in 1998 with a concert examination. Grants from the Jürgen Ponto Foundation, the Study Foundation of the German People as well the German Academic Exchange Service took him in 1994/95 to Aldo Parisot at the Yale School of Music in New Haven, Connecticut. Since then, Manuel von der Nahmer has appeared as soloist with a number of orchestras in Europe and the United States. Since 1997 he has been a member of the cello section in the Munich Philharmonic.
