Markus Rainer was born in Lienz, Austria, in 1977 and began studying the trumpet at the age of twelve. From 1993 to 1999 he studied with Erich Rinner at the Tyrol State Conservatory in Innsbruck. Since 1993 he has been a member of the ensemble of the Musikbanda Franui. Between 1996 and 2000 he played with various youth orchestras, among them the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra. From 2000 to 2002, he was a trumpeter in the Orchestra Academy of the Zurich Opera. From 2002 to 2003 Rainer had a one-year contract as utility trumpeter in the Bavarian State Orchestra. Since 2003 Markus Rainer serves in the same position with the Munich Philharmonic.
