Matias Piñeira was born in Chile and started to learn the French horn at the age of seven. He subsequently studied the instrument at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile and attended masterclasses, among others at German Brass and with Ignacio García, the solo hornist of Staatskapelle Berlin. Aged 19, Matias Piñeira was appointed solo hornist at the Orquesta Sinfónica de Chile.
In 2014 he joined the Orchestra Academy of Staatskapelle Berlin before taking on the position of solo hornist of the Munich Philharmonics in September 2015.
