Ricardo Carvalhoso is from Arcos de Valdevez in the North of Portugal and has been a member of the Munich Philharmonic since 2017. Like his brother before him, he had his first contact with music at a young age through the local brass band. Starting out on the trumpet, Carvalhoso took up the tuba at the age of 14. He received his musical education at the music school in Viana do Castelo under Juan Carlos Díaz and at the College for Music and Theatre in Porto under Sérgio Carolino. In 2008 he continued his studies at the Zurich University of the Arts under Anne Jelle Visser. In various youth orchestras, such as the Jeunesses Musicales World Orchestra and the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, and in the Orchestra Academy of the Munich Philharmonic, he gained first orchestral experience. His career as orchestra musician took him to France, where he played with the Niece Philharmonic, and Switzerland as a member of the orchestra of the Zurich Opera before returning to Germany and the Munich Philharmonic. Ricardo Carvalhoso has won numerous national and international competitions and is a much sought after soloist and educator.
