The composer Unsuk Chin was born in 1961 in Seoul, South Korea, but has lived in Germany since the age of 24 and has since resisted the desire of the expert public to pigeonhole her music. Her teacher György Ligeti initially plunged her into a deep creative crisis in 1985 by criticising her early works, whose post-serial style he saw as having no future. However, since Chin freed herself from the top-heaviness of the avant-garde and gave more and more space to her own dreams and fascinating magical worlds in her music, a stylistic world has emerged with which she identifies completely today: the need to give voice to the magic of her inner fantasy landscapes that has become sound.
