ODEON-Jugendsinfonieorchester München

The Munich Philharmonic’s protégé orchestra

Munich’s ODEON youth symphony orchestra has been the Munich Philharmonic’s protégé orchestra since 2010. A close friendship unites the two. The ensemble of currently around 70 musicians aged between 15 and 25 years gives young talents the opportunity of playing together at a high level and promotes mutual discourse and learning.

Since its foundation in 2006, the ODEON has performed under the renowned Chilean conductor Julio Doggenweiler Fernández at concerts both in Germany and abroad and achieved successes at the Deutscher Orchesterwettbewerb competition. In its own academy, the orchestra promotes young talents aged 10 to 16, giving them the opportunity of playing in an orchestra. Since 2010, the young musicians also benefit from the discourse with the Munich Philharmonic, whose members attend the ODEON’s sectional rehearsals of various instrument groups. They provide the youngsters with individual support, develop the programme together with them and they help prepare the subsequent tutti rehearsals and concerts. The Munich Philharmonic also supports its protégés with loaned instruments and sheet music.

For many years now, musicians from the ODEON have played symphony concerts together with their mentors, showing their skills at our youth concerts, at the family concerts of the MPHIL 360° festival, at the season’s kick-off in the Isarphilharmonie and at the Der Gasteig brummt! festival. The programme includes demanding works, such as Stravinsky’s Firebird suite, Ravel’s Ma Mère l’Oye and Prokofiev’s Cinderella.
