Burkhard Sigl comes from a musical family and had already begun playing the violin at the age of five. He completed his viola studies with honors at the Mozarteum in Salzburg and was promptly invited to join the faculty there. Besides a number of solo appearances with well-known orchestras, Burkhard Sigl was also active for many years in the chamber music field, doing yeoman service in such renowned groups as the Stradivari Sextet in Vienna and the Stadler Quartet, with which he became intensely involved in contemporary music. After three years as a member of the Hamburg State Opera, Burkhard Sigl switched to the Munich Philharmonic in 2001.
