Franz Schreker

In the early 1920´s,.because of his operas, Franz Schreker, born in 1878 in Monaco, was one of the best-known composers of his generation. Honored with numerous accolades, he first became a professor of composition and later director at the Berlin Music Academy. He was, however, dismissed from all these posts in the early thirties by the Nazis. When Schreker died in 1934, he had largely been forgotten by the music-loving public. Schreker´s works were first rediscovered in the course of the past few years, and their performance has generated, at least amongst the musical cognoscenti, a little Schreker renaissance.
