Jano Lisboa

Jano Lisboa is 1st prize winner in both Viola and Chamber Music categories in the Prémio Jovens Músicos in Lisbon (Portugal) and prizewinner in the Watson Forbes International Viola Competition (Scotland) achieving also a commendation for one of the test piece's best performances. He is also the winner of the 2006 NEC Mozart Concerto Competition in Boston, USA. Jano Lisboa was awarded with the Viana do Castelo Merit Citizen’s Medal (Portugal).

He traded the piano for the viola at the age of 13 and studied with José Luis Duarte and Paul Wakabayashi. Then he travelled to Boston in the USA to study with Kim Kashkashian at the New England Conservatory where he graduated with a Masters of Music diploma. Jano Lisboa also studied string quartet in Madrid with Rainer Schmidt (Hagen Quartet) at Reina Sofia Music School.

Mr. Lisboa was member of the Quatuor Benaïm during 2007-08 with whom he toured through Europe, Japan and Israel. He is now member of the Munich Chamber Orchestra and Artistic Director of the Festival VIANA - International Chamber Music. From September 2013 he will be the new Principal Viola of the Munich Philharmonic.

He performs regularly solo and chamber music recitals all around Europe, USA, Brazil, Asia and Africa. Jano Lisboa has played in prestigious venues such as Salzburg's Mozarteum, Boston's Jordan Hall, London's Royal Albert Hall, Berlin's Philharmonie, Munich's Herkulessaal and Concertgebouw in Amsterdam.

His chamber music partners to date were Jana Kuss, Peter Donohoe, Tabea Zimmermann, the Endellion String Quartet, Finghin Collins, Miguel da Silva, Vincent Planès and Julian Riem.

Mr. Lisboa worked with Tigran Mansurian the composer’s viola concerto “…and then I was in time again” that was nationally premiered in Portugal in 2006 with the Algarve Orchestra. His commitment to promote Portuguese music drove him to perform the Fernando Lopes-Graça's Viola Concertino with Orquestra do Norte and the Viola Concerto from Alexandre Delgado with the Gulbenkian Orchestra in Lisbon. In 2010 he performed Hindemith’s Der Schwannendreher with the Lisbon Metropolitan Orchestra. Recently Mr. Lisboa premiered his orchestration of V. Williams’ Romance for viola and chamber orchestra.
