Ulrich von Neumann-Cosel

Ulrich von Neumann-Cosel received his formative musical education at the age of six on the violoncello and with the Stuttgart Hymnus Boys’ Choir. Aged 13 he changed over to the double bass. After three years as a junior student with Prof Matthias Weber at the State University of Music and the Performing Arts Stuttgart, he studied under Prof Jörg Linowitzki at the Lübeck University of Music and Prof Esko Laine at the Hanns Eisler School of Music Berlin.

Ulrich von Neumann-Cosel received multiple awards in the national “Jugend musiziert” competition and won second prize at the “International Doublebass Convention Bass 2010 Berlin”. He gained experience in various youth orchestras, such as the National Youth Orchestra of Germany, as a solo bass player in the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester and as an academy player for Theater Lübeck and Staatskapelle Berlin. Ulrich von Neumann-Cosel is a member of the Munich Philharmonic’s double bass section since September 2012.

Beside his activities as classical musician, he founded the Yxalag Klezmer ensemble during his studies in Lübeck. Since 2008 this band is giving concerts throughout Europe and – in addition to appearances at the Klezmorimalta Festival on Malta and the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival – has also performed together with the Philharmonie Baden-Baden.
