With his symphonies, operas, concerti and chamber music, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (born on January 27, 1756 in Salzburg) is today the most-performed composer of all times. While still a child, he was already an international celebrity: trotted out by his father as a musical prodigy all over Europe, admired and fawned over by many a crowned and uncrowned head. For all of this, Mozart could not find a steady position later on in Vienna, but rather lived as a free-lance composer from the income of his works and concert performances. After Mozart had died in 1791 in Vienna at the age of 35, all kinds of myths and legends were heaped up around his person, provoked on the one hand by his alleged poverty and on the other by the circumstances of his death. These stories have influenced our image of the composer to this day.
