Im Mittelpunkt der Oper »Mathis der Maler« von Paul Hindemith steht das Leben des Malers Matthias Grünewald zur turbulenten Zeit der Reformation und der Bauernkriege. Inspiriert zu diesem Werk wurde Hindemith durch die Bilder des Isenheimer Altars. Das Plakatmotiv greift drei prägende Ausschnitte aus den drei Teilen des Werks auf und setzt sie zu einem modernen Triptychon wieder zusammen.
